A woman arrested and charged with the alleged abduction of a child Oct. 3 was released on $10,000 bail.

Fonda Merriman of Reader, according to Wetzel County Sheriff James Hoskins, jumped into a brown van occupied by a woman and her three-month-old baby and drove away with them on Tuesday evening.

When the van stopped at a traffic light in Jacksonburg, the abducted woman exited the van because she “feared for her safety,” Hoskins said.

The mother of the child made a 911 call at 6:52 p.m. and at 7:20 p.m. law enforcement officials apprehended the brown van about 1.5 miles east of New Martinsville. After Hoskins secured the infant and confirmed the child was unharmed, the baby was returned to its father.

Merriman’s husband, Roger Merriman, was charged with aiding and abetting. Both Fonda and Roger Merriman were arraigned Wednesday and released on $10,000 bond each.
