Multijurisdiction
Special Response Team (SRT)
Wetzel County Sheriffs Office
Law Enforcement Division
P.O. Drawer D, New Martinsville, WV 26155

The Wetzel County Sheriffs Office Special Response Team (SRT) was established in August 2005 in response to the growing need for a specially trained and equipped tactical operations Team for use in critical incidents beyond the scope of the single deputy or officer.

Utilizing the multi-jurisdictional model, Special Response Team members are drawn from the Wetzel County Sheriffs Office and New Martinsville Police Department on a voluntary basis. They must pass a screening process consisting of oral interviews, physical fitness test, and firearms skills evaluations. New members then complete a 40-hour tactical training school before starting more advanced training and integrating onto the Team. Training is on going and the SRT trains at least one full day per month, and must qualify with pistol, rifle, and shotguns on at least a quarterly basis.

The SRT handles calls in Wetzel County, and also surrounding jurisdictions upon request through Mutual Aid statutes. Some of the critical incidents the Team may respond to are as follows:

1. Hostage situations
2. Barricade situations
3. High risk warrant service
4. High risk apprehensions
5. Sniper situations
6. Dignitary protection
7. As directed by the Sheriff for special assignments

It is internationally recognized that a well managed team response to critical incident results in the successful resolution of such incidents, and has been shown to substantially reduce the risk of injury or loss of life to citizens, law enforcement personnel, and suspects.

The following deputies and officers are members of the SRT
